Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Kate Wallace looks to record and translate her own experience of place and urban living through the dialogue of representational painting. Working with oil on panel and linen in a miniature format, her landscapes and interiors are typified by an atmospheric ambiguity that flirts between serenity and unease.
In A Detour Wallace presents a series of small scale paintings completed while in residence at Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf. Informed by photographs taken in wait or transit, the paintings capture moments of escape, solitude and silence in architectural and outdoor spaces. Alongside a curated selection of texts from the Reading Room collection, the works explore ideas relating to time, place and the unknown.
