Mark Gowing (b. 1970) is an artist and typographer working on Gadigal/Wangal country, Sydney, Australia. Through a practice spanning more than 35 years he has developed a personal inquiry into the poetry of form, grid and rhythm that he investigates using drawing, photography, found materials and abstracted applications of text. Gowing’s practice centres on the conceptual understanding of languages – graphic, written, oral or cultural.
Drawing on a lifetime spent working with books, A realistic picture of a galloping horse examines these artefacts as containers of language, and presents language as a relationship of abstract forms. Gowing’s carefully constructed mixed-media works expose visual rhythms and geometric collisions governed by unique combinations of text and readymade ground.
