‘According to history’ represents the sum of German-born artist Elger Esser’s body of work produced on his travels to New South Wales, Australia, in 2015. Places of oblivion, but also of beauty, Esser’s photographs search for places that carry the history and culture of immigrants since the 18th century- finding their mark on the land.
With a deep connection to the history of photography, Esser embraces the frontier of artificial intelligence to transfigure poetic-painterly versions of his images- losing their story and narration in favour of dreamy non-truth. Harbouring a reality and recognitive state and yet, at the same time, an unreality transformed into complete fiction. Esser considers the legacy of photography and its renewed relationship to painting- questioning the next epochal change in the world of images.
