CHAUFFEUR is pleased to present Madeline Simm’s inaugural exhibition in Sydney. Blue Skirt Waltz continues to explore an intriguing visual language of high and low culture inspired by reductive vintage fabric patterns and textile prints. Simm employs a restrictive square canvas format as entry point to an illustrative and abstract reading with the poetic use of ambiguous titles advocating a woman’s garment and the body, dance and movement. “Repeating the square unifies the body of painting and creates a visual rhythm between them” states the painter, Simm’s use of crops and unexpected juxtapositions to amplify the push and pull emotion triggered by vibrant colour and composition. The latest body of work is graphic and intuitive - the repetitive circular motion in brushwork and a soft palette in oil on linen creates fluid positive and negative spaces. Colour is the pivotal emotive form of expression taking on immense dimensions without losing clarity. Madeleine Simm (b. 1994) graduated in Painting from Victoria College of the Arts, Melbourne. Recent solo and group exhibitions include Conner Conners, Melbourne; Savage Garden; ACCA; Daine Singer; West Space; Sarah Scouts Presents, Melbourne. Upcoming launch of limited edition artist monograph at NGV Art Book Fair published by Stray Pages and group show at Sutton Projects Melbourne.
