Deux draws from the core idea of modernism - the world has to be fundamentally rethought. Mitchell and van Dort’s work looks at the dual use of found objects and images, giving a second life to the ordinary and repositioning them as works of art. Mitchell’s innovation and experimentation with form rejects mass production to champion sustainability. With an emphasis on materials, techniques and processes, she uses all parts of an object whilst maintaining the integrity of the piece. Mitchell’s jewellery, wearable art and objects are handmade from recycled sterling silver, vintage and found objects. Steeped in symbolism, van Dort’s work begins with collage, choosing images from discarded books to bring together a new image that comments on both political and social agendas. Using the 19th century process of photogravure as well as screenprinting popularised in the 60’s, her current work explores female empowerment and inequality in the 21st century.
