Opening reception: Friday 16 June, 6–8pm
Nasha is pleased to present Faint young sun (letters to a future), a solo exhibition by Mark Maurangi Carrol.
Faint young sun (letters to a future) is a reference to the paradox of early life existing on Earth despite the sun at the time not emitting enough light to allow for liquid water. It is a poetic reference to the passage of time and the finalistic influence light plays in Carrol's practice; painting out the light rather than painting with it.
The works explore recurring themes of anonymity, desire, nostalgia, place and recreated memory. Figures extracted from redundant virtual contexts seep through the loom-state linen. Devoid of defining features, they are simultaneously anonymous yet familiar. Bodies appear cramped or cut off within Carrol's compositions, giving a sense of their journey beyond the canvas and referencing the artist's frequent relocations around Australia and the Cook Islands.
