Emma Lyn Winkler's, ‘Final Curtain Call,’ delves into death and the absurd using collage, painting, and ceramics. Her work examines the way we respond to our own mortality, confronting the futility of attempting to ward off death. Through fractured layers and theatrical characters, Emma explores embracing death as a means to confront anxiety and existential dread.
Using a personal yet playful methodology, Emma’s practice finds intersections of collage, painting and animation to explore the relationship between anxiety and death. Through intricate paintings, layering a network of imagery, and slapstick animations with visceral textures and messy ends, Emma encourages viewers to laugh in the face of death, or at least have a conversation about it.
Emma completed a Bachelor of Fine Art Honours in 2022. Recent solo exhibitions include A Mere Passing Thing at PLATFORM Arts (Geelong), Dirt Nap at Sauerbier House (Adelaide) and The Sky is Falling at Canada Bay Gallery (Sydney). Emma was selected for this year’s SIGNAL Screen Commissions and has upcoming exhibitions with PhotoAccess (Canberra), Town Hall Gallery (Melbourne) and NRCG (Ballina).
