Next is an exhibition of new artworks by Ian Wells.
These multi-panel works explore different ways of painting with irregular colour, and broken surfaces. Varying opacity is used as a compositional device, as are interrupting and inscribed lines, and colour washes.
Painted in the past year, the paintings are borne of unexpected circumstance and changed understanding. In turn, Ian’s practice has developed to accommodate restrictions and apply considered resolutions. Subsequently new skills translate to new marks, but used sparingly with pared down forms and lines.
As before, there is no biographical element in these works, no story or implied meaning. Ian noted, ‘I’m more interested in the formal and technical challenges of composition, surface, colour and the absolute delight that making these works brings to me.’
