The ‘Pantry Study’ exhibition celebrates the rich tapestry of cultures that make up contemporary Australia by delving into the heart of 15 households and their pantries. We are home to the world's oldest continuous cultures, as well as Australians who identify with more than 270 ancestries. Since 1945, almost seven million people have migrated to Australia. This rich, cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths.
In this series of works, I will visit 15 families from diverse backgrounds here in
Melbourne and take a glimpse into their pantries. A lot of us foster an appreciation for the cultural diversity that defines modern Australia — I hope to discover the stories, recipes, and flavours that have shaped our nation's culinary identity. A testament to the way food unites us.
This exhibition narrative has stemmed from myself wanting to find out about my culture and background (white Australia), and finding out that my family grew up in the great
depression, and don’t have a strong cultural identity here in Australia ... but do I? Is modern Australia actually a celebration of all cultures and traditions?
