CHALK HORSE is thrilled to announce our first solo exhibition of 2024, ‘Remembering Country’ by Rodney Adams. The exhibition will open on the 9th of Feb and continue until the 3rd of March.
‘Remembering Country’ was conceived and painted in Adams’ home, which is situated in the town of Roebourne in the Pilbara region of WA. The show comprises of 16 paintings and traverses through locations familiar to the artist. Adams depicts places he encounters in his day-to-day life, in his imagination and through his childhood memories.
Talking about the painting ‘Shearing Shed’, Adams recalls,
“This is Woodbrook Station. You can see the managers house and the shearers house and the kitchen. This is how I remember it before the cyclone came and destroyed the buildings. I paint with my feet on the ground, but I can map out the country as if I was flying over. I have painted this from my memory. Instead of painting with dots and marks like traditional Aboriginal paintings I like to paint things figuratively so everyone can understand.”
Biography:
Rodney Adams is a Yindjibarndi man who was born in the town of Roebourne, WA. Rodney began painting in 2021, after watching his partner paint at home. Adams’ work depicts landscapes and places that he has spent time on during his childhood. When he paints, Adams lays down a secret mix of Pilbara earth underneath all of his paintings. He paints the Yindjibarndi country and surrounding areas as well as animals and infrastructure, capturing the essence of the Pilbara through the mental images he has of a place, rather than photographs. This is second solo show at CHALK HORSE.
