Sentensing acts as a pitstop in an ongoing collaboration between Corey Black and Tommy Carman that hinges on the conception of language as a material that can be used disparately, and in varying stages of refinement. Honing in on the peculiarities of each other’s works and conceptions of language, their collaboration welcomes dissonance and a conflict between material presence and pictorial representation. By embracing fluctuations between compromise and misinterpretation, between the prosaic and the allegorical, their hybridised language incorporates the trappings of language in its very makeup.
