“I can see the infinite and exquisitely realised tonal variations that make her among the most sensitive colourists to have ever worked in Australia, the way in which her compositions have, over time, alternated between complex spatial puzzles and flatly conceived spaces in which the symbols of her distinctive vernacular float untethered” National Gallery of Australia’s Senior Curator of Australian Art Elspeth Pitt on Helen Maudsley, 2023.
Important and inventive Melbourne-based artist Helen Maudsley presents new paintings at Niagara Galleries this July. Completed between 2019 and 2023, this work celebrates multiplicity and complexity through compositions that unravel over time, greatly rewarding viewers who spend time with them.
From her earliest work, Helen Maudsley dissected the observed world into geometric shapes that through visual and verbal investigation reveal myriad associations. The detailed paintings in Maudsley’s latest exhibition continues this interest, exploring the inextricable link between language and painting through the use of recognisable, often coded forms in spaces both deep and shallow, deftly shifting between multiple perspectives.
This will be Helen Maudsley’s fourteenth solo exhibition with Niagara Galleries since she first exhibited with us in 2000. Her work is held in important public collections throughout Australia including Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; Bendigo Art Gallery, VIC; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, NSW; as well as the British Museum, London, UK. Helen Maudsley has consistently exhibited since 1957 and she continues to maintain a dedicated studio practice.
