Whilst living in Mosman in the early 1980s Imants Tillers enacted a major shift in his work. He stopped making post-object installations and experimentations with works which interrogated the nature of ‘received images’* and started producing artworks made up of a number of small canvas boards. Significantly, this moment was a profound change; it represented a notable shift in the focus of his work. Tillers began developing the postmodern style he has become known for today, incorporating appropriation and showing his influences in his work. Around this time Tillers’ work featured in several important exhibitions around the world including at MoMA PS1 and Bess Cutler in New York; LA County Museum, LA; ICA, London; documenta7, and the Sydney, São Paulo and Venice Biennales.
Make sure you don’t miss out on seeing forty years of work by one of Australia’s most significant artists.
