STATION is delighted to present our first solo exhibition with Karla Dickens: Aboriginal Intelligence.
Dickens is a celebrated multidisciplinary artist of Wiradjuri, Irish and German heritage, known for her astute and often provocative reflections on Australian culture. For this exhibition, Dickens presents her unique take on AI, celebrating Indigenous Knowledge systems, or Aboriginal Intelligence.
AI usually refers to the intelligence of machines or software. In the history of humankind, it is a recent invention, the result of technological advances over the past century. Conversely, Aboriginal Intelligence refers to ancient wisdoms of Indigenous Knowledge and connection to country and culture. The concept of ‘deep learning’ in AI contrasts with deep listening, which is central to Indigenous Knowledge.
Dickens is a bowerbird and a weaver, collecting, combining and repurposing materials and concepts in unexpected ways. Inspired by dreamlike revelations of Country, Dickens’ new works are informed by issues surrounding identity, spiritualism and the environment.
