EXHIBITION HOURS 12–6PM TH–SU
OPENING DRINKS 3–5PM SA JUNE 22
In his art practice, Richard Nolan-Neylan is drawn to the poetry within art works — whether that be line work and composition in drawing, or controlling and playing with light in photography. This stunning exhibition presents four different collections of Richard’s work: two photographic, and two drawing.
Nolan-Neylan’s continuing photographic series Darker Than Light pays homage to the golden age of the Dutch masters, while Obituary, a collaboration with animal rights activist and model Stefania Ferrario, celebrates the body.
Life drawing is a collection of works drawn over a number of years, both in his home and in various studios. Nolan-Neylan has developed a simple yet evocative and poetic style using singular lines often allowing the viewer to add what is missing.
Oatlands (a town in Southern Tasmania) is where Nolan-Neylan has drawn some of his first plein air landscapes. Before setting himself the task of working with fine intricate detail at a much smaller scale than in his large life drawings, he explored the works of John Skinner Prout, Nora Heysen, Arthur Streeton and Lloyd Rees in the study room at the Art Gallery of NSW.
LIFE DRAWING SESSIONS 6.30–8.30PM TH & FR JUNE 20 & 21
Richard will be leading two life drawing sessions in the gallery to coincide with his exhibition. To enhance your drawing experience a vintage 70s sound system (Leak, B&W and Thorens 125 MKII turntable to the initiated) will be playing the sounds of Bill Withers, Cosby Still and Nash and similar artists.
Lamah (@wombatcereal) will be the model for the Thursday session. Ebs (@ebsandflow.lifemodel) will pose on the Friday evening. Richard’s drawings of Ebs are featured in the show.
