Yongping Ren been experimenting with clay for over a year. This show is an opportunity to share his experiments from the past year at different stages. Ren moved from glaze and fired clay to unfired and burnishing clay with water and stones, then mixing watercolour, paper, text, and drawing into the clay. Ren also plays with arranging the clay with found objects. People give him single words and he reflect on those words for weeks—queerness, grotesque, fear and desire, curiosity, free. Ren finds what he wants to do and also what he doesn’t need to do. He like reflecting on feedback through fast and repetitive experiments. If he think about queerness and Dao道—which is what he is studying— he thinks: "never stop. I just show you so far what I have achieved. It’s intense and I almost drop it. But I come back to it and I feel good. Satisfied in being unsatisfied". This show’s title is rúyì如意 which is a traditional artefact transformed from a back-scratcher. The name rúyì如意 means as you desire.
Yongping Ren is an artist working across clay, paper, drawing and colour. He is currently studying in the MFA program at RMIT and has been running Run Artist Run in Docklands since 2023.
