Call of the Coast is a series of paintings based on getting away from it all and being immersed in a region on Tasmania’s north-east coast for six months. Making drawings and studies ideas developed into paintings about forms and space in the landscape.
Nostalgic shacks contrast with the architecture of the natural environment, exploring expanses of sky and water. Light perpetually changes, the symphony of the ocean is ever-present, and brief epic moments intertwine with the prevalence of the everyday. Amid shoulder seasons, the offseason, and between occasional heavy weather events, a muted eeriness pervades.
While the subject matter of these works concentrates on the external environment, each work filters through an inner world. The resulting paintings in this exhibition are formed from multiple experiences, responses embedded in paint to the call of the coast.
