midling (Larrakia: Together) — the sound, the saying of the word evokes its meaning, the syllables coalescing, entwining.
The Cross Art Projects presents midling 2 (Larrakia: Together), a selection of new and remade works by Gary Lee. Drawing on the artist’s personal archive of historic family photographs and artworks, the exhibition ricochets through time—within a life and across centuries—to offer a mini-retrospective of an essentially iconoclastic practice which both mimics and reframes ideals of identity, masculinity, beauty and ethnicity from a Larrakia perspective.
midling 2 is an enlarged iteration of midling (shown @coconutstudiosgallery as part of the 2023 Darwin Festival), and will be Lee’s fifteenth solo exhibition in as many years, and his first solo exhibition in Sydney. The exhibition also sets the stage for the Sydney launch of Heat: Gary Lee, selected texts, art & anthropology (2023), edited by curator Maurice O’Riordan, which spans five decades of Lee’s writing on art, his own and others, and Larrakia and Indigenous culture.
We warmly invite you to this timely look at contested, sometimes controversial spaces in relation to Indigenous identity, queerness and the archive.
