STATION is delighted to present our forthcoming exhibition with Dean Cross, OVERTURE (GODZILLA), his second solo presentation with the gallery.
Centralised around the fear and looming threat of the unknown, Cross uses an erratic combination of text, colour and collage to challenge the audience in finding new connections (or paradoxes) between the works and to generate new meaning. Through his manipulation of line, over exaggerated features and abstracted shapes, Cross confronts the expectations of painting, whilst revealing the truths of portraiture and what is unable to be concealed.
Coinciding with Cross’ exhibition, Black Smoke White Walls at Gertrude Contemporary, OVERTURE (GODZILLA) is the introduction to a larger series of upcoming projects and exhibitions for the artist. Interested in the collisions of materials, ideas and histories, Cross is motivated by an understanding that his practice sits within a continuum of the oldest living culture on Earth – and enacts First Nations sovereignty through expanded contemporary art methodologies. His cross-disciplinary practice often confronts the legacies of modernism, rebalancing dominant cultural and social histories.
