STATION is delighted to announce Reko Rennie’s latest exhibition, REMIX, his seventh solo presentation with the gallery. For REMIX, Rennie has reworked text, imagery and themes that have been consistent throughout his practice. Brightly coloured camouflage, geometric patterning, and graffiti-style markings have become synonymous with Rennie’s highly recognisable and celebrated visual language. As a contemporary artist and a Kamilaroi man, Rennie has constantly negotiated complex discussions of First Nations cultural and social visibility within the art world and the broader community. His practice confronts notions of ‘traditional’ versus ‘urban’ Aboriginal identity, challenging the romanticised image of Aboriginal Art that is often perpetuated. Rennie asks why First Nations artists are still so often positioned within the context of their Indigeneity. This discussion of identity politics in art has been around for decades, and within the Australian context has been voiced by other high profile artists including Gordon Bennett and Tracey Moffat. Debates around First Nations’ sovereignty and voice are particularly pointed at this moment in time, as the nation heads towards a vote for recognition and representation of Indigenous Australians. As the artist says: “It’s time for a remix!”
